The Poisonwood Bible - brilliant title, brilliant book

This review has been rated 5 stars

This is a dark but rich tale of the destructive nature of religious fanaticism involving an entire family and the brooding madness of the patriarch who heads it. Nathan Price, a Baptist minister takes his wife and four daughters to the Congo in 1959 in a zealous mission to save African souls. It is a beautifully crafted novel with a deeply haunting storyline that captures the reader from the first page.

I found the book had a vaguely surreal quality about it that drew me in and gave the entire read a slight edge that kept me intrigued. Kingsolver writes with poetic mastery and I found myself reading some passages more than once just to appreciate her craftsmanship. Highly recommended.
